La Serenissima

The other name for Venice is “La Serenissima”. There is little serenity to be found in spring, summer or fall. But, in few winter months, most of the tourists are gone, and the city is again "The Most Serene One".

Dead End in Venice

Actually, there are no dead ends in Venice. It will always be, in the deepest end, some hidden door or secret passage to the other side. And if not, few chairs and small tables will wait for you to catch your breath and have some cappuccino. Personally, I prefer latte.

First Snow

Venice is in northern part of Italy, so yes, it is snowing couple of times during the winter. Here is the snow only on the rooftops, and it is not going to stay long. Soon will be just a memory of the First Snow.

STOMP on Broadway

Stomp is a non-traditional dance troupe (originating in Brighton, UK) that uses the body and ordinary objects to create a physical theatre performance.
If I would write a recipe for this painting, the list of ingredients would look like this: black paint, white paint.

For centuries gondolas were the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. In modern times the iconic boats still have a role in public transport in the city. According to Wikipedia, gondolas are hand made using 8 different types of wood (fir, oak, cherry, walnut, elm, mahogany, larch and lime) and are composed of 280 pieces. I had no idea.

Fruit and vegetable boats aren't so common nowadays, but there are still few places where you can buy an apple from a greengrocer on a boat. After all, just about everything Venice needs, is coming every day by a flotilla of all kind and sizes of boats.

On May 28, at 8:10 PM (EST), the Sun's rays will fall exactly parallel to the Manhattan skyline. Provided you are somewhere that has a clear, unobstructed view of the New Jersey horizon, like 42nd Street, you'll be able to see the sun cross every cross-street in Manhattan.

Salon International
























My painting has been accepted for Salon International in Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art. A bit strange, since in my entire career, I participated in only two art competitions. It is not my cup of tea. But, I am definitely pleased that the gallery is using my painting "Sunset Over 42nd Street", to advertise the exhibition.

42nd Street Sunset

42nd is a known street, but not as famous as Broadway, 5th Avenue or Park Avenue. It should be, since 42nd Street has something all this other streets don't: some of the most beautiful sunsets.

Times Square No Turns

Times Square is a major intersection in Manhattan, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. All this streets put together, and you have a wonderful mess. My kind of subject to paint.

Share Everything

According to my favorite book, "All I need to know I learned in kindergarten", the very first thing you should learn is share everything. And in the big city's roads, this means share the road. Some other time, will tell you what else we could learn in kindergarten.

One of the most used traffic sign in New York City is "One Way". The subtle message of three identical signs is, don't even think of making right turn. The other popular sign? "Don't even think to park here".

Vincent Sinovcic 1933-2010
A personal note:
I was a child when my older brother Vincent, left our native country. He took with him my only possession, a wristwatch I got for my first communion. He needed it more than me. After wandering for several years through Western Europe, he emigrated to the country of his dreams, USA. Some 30 years later, I came to America, and brought with me few of my possessions, like a pair of skis. We hardly recognized each other, and after all these years, I still remember his first words: "By God, who comes to America with skis"? Later, he gave me back my old, broken wristwatch. Don't know how, but I lost that watch.
And today I lost my brother.
If you have some wine, please have a glass for Vincent, a historian, a writer and a dreamer.

The marble arch designed by Stanford White, erected in 1892. By the year 2000, air pollution had severely eroded parts of the statue of Washington. An extensive renovation was undertaken, and the arch again has been restored to its former glory.
